Chapter 6 - THE TRAITOR IN THE BOARDROOM

Donovan Pierce arrived at Kinsley Holdings the following morning.

He expected a routine executive meeting.

Instead, he found Roman waiting with two attorneys and an independent forensic accountant.

Donovan smiled.

“What's all this?”

Roman looked at him.

“Sit down.”

Donovan's smile faded.

“Roman?”

“Sit.”

He obeyed.

Roman placed a folder on the table.

Inside were payment records.

Medical facility invoices.

Copies of correspondence.

And evidence linking Donovan to the concealment of Margaret Kinsley.

Donovan stared at the papers.

Then laughed.

“Where did you get this?”

Roman didn't answer.

Donovan leaned back.

“You've been listening to that secretary.”

Roman's expression changed.

“Careful.”

Donovan smirked.

“She's been digging into things she doesn't understand.”

Roman stood.

“She understands loyalty better than you ever did.”

The room went silent.

Donovan's face hardened.

“You think she cares about you?”

Roman stared at him.

“She cares about the truth.”

Donovan laughed.

“Truth doesn't keep an empire alive.”

“No,” Roman said quietly.

He looked at the documents.

“But lies destroy one.”

The meeting ended without violence.

Roman's attorneys preserved the evidence and referred it to investigators.

Donovan was removed from his position pending the investigation.

As he left, he turned toward Roman.

“You're making a mistake.”

Roman met his eyes.

“I made the mistake twenty years ago.”

Donovan frowned.

May you like

“What?”

“Trusting you.”
