Investigators uncovered financial misconduct, intimidation, and evidence connected to Margaret's confinement.
Roman cooperated fully.
He accepted that his own past decisions would be scrutinized.
And when the legal proceedings finally ended, he did not celebrate.
He simply went to see his mother.
Margaret sat in the garden.
Sunlight warmed her face.
Roman sat beside her.
“It's over,” he said.
She looked at him.
“Is it?”
He nodded.
“The worst of it.”
Margaret smiled sadly.
“Then don't spend the rest of your life looking backward.”
Roman took her hand.
“I won't.”
She studied him.
“You love that girl.”
Roman smiled.
“Yes.”
“She loves you too.”
“I know.”
Margaret squeezed his hand.
“Then don't make the mistake your father made.”
Roman looked at her.
“What mistake?”
“Thinking love means keeping someone under your control.”
