Chapter 8 - THE JOURNAL OF THE DEAD

Vivien stared at the journal.

“Where did you get that?”

Vincent smiled.

“Your father was more cooperative than you realize.”

She felt sick.

“You told him to destroy it.”

“Of course.”

“But he gave it to you.”

Vincent nodded.

Vivien looked at the worn leather cover.

Her mother's handwriting.

Her mother's secrets.

Everything she'd searched for.

Vincent opened the journal.

Inside were names.

Dates.

Financial transactions.

Medical records.

Evidence of a network that had operated for decades.

Vivien recognized several names.

Politicians.

Businessmen.

Criminal leaders.

Then she saw one that made her heart stop.

Antonio Costa.

Edmund's father.

Vivien stared.

“No.”

Vincent smiled.

“Your husband's family was involved from the beginning.”

She shook her head.

“Edmund doesn't know.”

“Doesn't he?”

Vivien looked away.

Vincent leaned closer.

“Tell me something, Mrs. Costa. Do you really believe your husband is different from his father?”

Vivien thought of Edmund's quiet kindness.

His respect for her boundaries.

The way he'd held her after her father's betrayal.

“Yes,” she said.

Vincent laughed.

“You're very naive.”

Vivien met his eyes.

“Maybe.”

Then she smiled faintly.

“But you're making one mistake.”

Vincent frowned.

May you like

“What?”

“You think I'm waiting for my husband to save me.”
