Chapter 9 - The Adoption Decree

A week later, the private chambers of Judge Harrison were filled with the fragrance of fresh white roses.

Hannah sat on the leather sofa between Julian and Dr. Evans. She wore a bright yellow sundress that matched the morning sunshine streaming through the arched stained-glass windows.

Judge Harrison took off her spectacles and smiled warmly across the desk.

"Hannah," the judge asked gently, "do you understand what we are doing here today?"

Hannah nodded, her small hand firmly wrapped around Julian's fingers. "Mr. Julian is becoming my real father."

"And is that what you want, sweetheart?"

"Yes," Hannah said without a second of doubt. "He makes pancakes on Saturdays, and he listens to me play the piano, and when there's a storm, he leaves the hall light on so the thunder isn't loud."

Judge Harrison’s eyes softened with genuine emotion. She picked up her pen and signed the final page of the decree with a bold, flourishing stroke.

"By the authority vested in me by the State, I hereby declare that Hannah Clara Vance is the legally adopted daughter of Julian Vance, with all rights, protections, and privileges of a natural-born child. Congratulations, Mr. Vance."

Julian looked down at his daughter. A deep, chest-heaving breath of pure relief escaped him. He picked her up in his arms, spinning her around the judge's office as Hannah erupted into delighted giggles.

"We did it, sweetheart," Julian laughed, kissing her forehead. "You're a Vance forever."

"I was always a Vance," Hannah giggled back, tapping the silver compass resting over her yellow dress. "My compass just had to find you."
