Chapter 7 - The Lingering Shadow

Even behind bars, a wounded animal can still lash out.

A month after Thornton's arrest, Julian took Hannah on her first public outing: an afternoon visit to the city’s botanical conservatory, which had been closed to the public for a private family tour.

Hannah wore a soft lavender cashmere coat and polished black Mary Jane shoes. Her cheeks had regained their rosy fullness, and her hair was brushed into shiny, soft curls held back by a silver ribbon. She ran through the glass pavilion, marveling at the giant tropical orchids and chasing blue morpho butterflies.

Julian watched from the stone pathway, a gentle smile gracing his usually stoic face. Edward stood twenty paces back, his radio headset humming with security updates.

Suddenly, Edward’s posture stiffened. "Boss. Perimeter team reports an unauthorized vehicle parked in the service bay. Two men bypassed the delivery gates."

Before Julian could move, a man in a delivery uniform stepped out from behind a row of towering palms, pulling a heavy pneumatic stun-baton from his jacket. It was one of Thornton’s former enforcers from the boarding house, desperate to grab the girl to use as leverage for Thornton’s pending bail hearing.

Hannah froze, the orchid in her hand falling to the cobblestones. The man’s face was familiar; he was the one who had brought the stale bread to the basement.

"Come here, kid," the man hissed, lunging forward.

He never reached her.

Julian crossed the distance like a thunderbolt. He didn't shout; he didn't hesitate. He intercepted the man mid-stride, grabbing the enforcer's wrist with crushing force, twisting the baton free, and driving a devastating palm strike directly into the man’s sternum.

The enforcer slammed into the brick planter with a breathless wheeze, dropping to his knees. Before he could recover, Julian’s foot pinned him to the floor, his eyes blazing with an ancient, terrifying fury that made the mercenary tremble in absolute horror.

"Touch her again," Julian whispered, his voice like grinding tectonic plates, "and you won't live long enough to see a courtroom."

Edward and two armed guards materialized instantly, securing the intruder in zip-ties and dragging him away through the service exit before the police sirens even reached the outer gates.

Julian spun around immediately, dropping to both knees before Hannah. His heart was hammering, fear for her safety eclipsing every ounce of his composure. "Hannah, are you hurt? Did he touch you?"

Hannah didn't cry. She didn't cower.

Instead, she stepped forward and wrapped her small arms tightly around Julian's neck, burying her face in his shoulder.

"I wasn't scared," she whispered.

Julian held her so tight his knuckles turned white. "You weren't?"

"No," Hannah said, her small voice steady and clear. "Because you're here. You always come when it rains."
