Chapter 5 - The Legal Serpent

At 8:30 AM, Dr. Evans walked into Julian's study holding a sealed biological assay envelope.

"Ninety-nine point nine percent match," Evans stated without preamble. "She is Clara's daughter. Biologically, genetically, undeniably a Vance."

"Good," Julian said, buttoning the cuffs of his bespoke charcoal suit. "Because Richard Thornton's attorneys just filed an emergency habeas corpus writ with the family division downtown."

Twenty minutes later, the mahogany double doors of Judge Harrison's private chambers swung open.

Richard Thornton sat at the conference table. He had aged poorly; his hairline had receded, his tailored suit struggled to mask a bloated frame, and his eyes held the desperate, shifty arrogance of a career grifter cornered by wolves. Beside him was Bradley Cross, a notoriously ruthless high-profile defense attorney.

"Julian," Thornton said, standing with an outstretched hand and a smile that reeked of manufactured warmth. "What a miraculous morning. When my staff informed me that my dear daughter had wandered away during the storm and ended up in your care, I wept with gratitude."

Julian ignored the hand, taking the leather armchair directly across the table. His posture was effortless, predatory, and commanding.

"Save the theater for the jury, Richard," Julian said, his voice chilling the room by ten degrees. "You kept a child locked in an unheated basement for seven years. You starved her, beat her, and forged state identification to collect welfare stipends while hiding her from her lawful family."

Cross cleared his throat aggressively. "Your Honor, these are outrageous, unsubstantiated slanderous accusations from a billionaire attempting an illegal custodial snatch. Mr. Thornton is the sole surviving biological and legal parent. Mr. Vance has zero legal standing. We demand the immediate return of the child to her father's custody."

Judge Harrison, an austere woman in her sixties who had presided over family courts for three decades, looked at Cross, then at Julian.

"Mr. Vance, do you have documentation to support these severe criminal allegations?"

Julian gestured to Edward, who opened a heavy leather portfolio and laid four separate files before the judge.

"First," Julian said smoothly, "a notarized DNA confirmation from an accredited state medical laboratory proving the child's identity as Hannah Clara Vance. Second, high-resolution photographic evidence taken three hours ago documenting fourteen distinct contusions, three second-degree cigarette burns, and severe chronic malnutrition."

Thornton’s face paled, sweat beading along his upper lip.

"Third," Julian continued without breaking stride, "the complete operational logs from the illegal foster property on 4th Street, recovered by federal marshals forty minutes ago under an emergency raid warrant issued by the Department of Justice."

Judge Harrison’s eyes hardened as she read through the medical photographs. The disgust on her face was palpable.

"And fourth," Julian leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table, fixing his gaze on Thornton like a hawk watching a dying rodent, "the sworn confession of your mechanic from seven years ago, confirming you paid him fifty thousand dollars in cash to tamper with the brake lines of Clara's SUV."

Thornton jumped to his feet, knocking his chair backward. "That’s a lie! You bought him off! You can't prove that!"

"Sit down, Mr. Thornton!" Judge Harrison slammed her gavel onto the wooden desk.

The chamber doors clicked open, and two armed federal agents stepped into the room.

"Richard Thornton," the lead agent announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for first-degree attempted murder, felony child endangerment, grand larceny, and federal fraud."

Thornton looked frantically at his lawyer, but Cross had already packed his briefcase and taken two steps back, washing his hands of the sinking ship.

As the agents twisted Thornton's arms behind his back and led him out, Julian remained seated, watching his sister's killer dragged away into the dark corridors of justice.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Harrison said softly, signing an emergency protection order with a heavy gold pen. "Temporary emergency custody is granted to you immediately. Permanent adoption proceedings will follow on my docket next Tuesday."

"Thank you, Your Honor," Julian said, rising and bowing his head with quiet grace.
