Chapter 5 - The Twenty Percent Inheritance

Julian Hayes, the family's chief legal counsel, stepped into the apartment carrying his leather briefcase, followed by Marco.
Julian examined the vellum document beneath the light, running his thumb over the gold seal.
“It's 100% authentic, Dominic,” Julian confirmed with grave reverence. “Your father executed this codicil in my presence. But three days after his funeral, the master file was stolen from our firm's digital archive.”
“Who had access to that vault, Julian?” Dominic asked, his voice dropping into a tone of lethal steel.
“Only three people,” Julian answered. “Myself, your father... and your cousin Victor Moretti.”
I stood frozen beside the counter, holding Lily close against my chest.
“Mr. Moretti,” I whispered, overwhelmed by the magnitude of what was happening. “I never asked for your father's wealth. He gave me that document in a sealed envelope and told me to hide it until someone tried to force me out. I only ever wanted to do my job and raise my daughter in peace.”
Dominic walked over to me, stopping only a foot away.
“My father spent his life protecting this family from enemies on the street, Anna,” Dominic murmured, looking down into my eyes with profound warmth. “He knew that his greatest enemies were sitting at his own dinner table. You kept his trust for three years in silence while living in this cold apartment.”

He gently touched Lily’s curls.
“You are not an employee who got fired, Anna. You are the second largest shareholder in the Moretti empire. And nobody in this city will ever threaten you again.”
