Chapter 4 - The Document Beneath the Tissue Paper

Dominic walked across the worn carpet, stopping before the small closet in the corner of the living room.
“Lily mentioned a shoebox,” Dominic said gently.
I hesitated, standing up and wiping my damp cheeks. “Mr. Moretti... those were private notes your father asked me to keep when he was undergoing treatment at Mount Sinai.”
“My father trusted you, Anna,” Dominic said, his slate-grey eyes meeting mine with absolute sincerity. “And right now, I need to know why someone in my company is trying to erase you.”
I walked to the closet, reached beneath a stack of winter blankets, and pulled out an old navy blue shoebox tied with a faded red ribbon.
I handed it to Dominic.
He untied the ribbon with steady, careful fingers.
Inside were forty-eight sealed envelopes, each labeled with a month and year spanning eight years of forensic accounting audits:
Unaccounted shipping manifests from Port Newark.
Ghost payroll disbursements routed to shell entities.
Altered real estate appraisal contracts signed by Victor Moretti.
Dominic pulled back the silk tissue paper lining the bottom of the shoebox.
Resting beneath the letters was a heavy, vellum legal document embossed with the gold wax seal of the Salvatore Moretti Testamentary Trust, signed and notarized just fourteen days before the patriarch's death.
Dominic unfolded the parchment.
Above his father’s bold, iconic signature was a single, unalterable clause:
‘In recognition of the blood debt owed to the Carter family, and to ensure the eternal protection of Anna Carter and her issue: I hereby convey and assign twenty percent (20%) of the total voting equity of Moretti Global Holdings to Anna Carter, effective upon the maturity of the Heritage Trust.’
