Chapter 5 - The Brother Who Stole His Name
Agents entered the factory before dawn.
They found three children, two nurses, and a room filled with forged identities.
Claire was not there.
But Victor’s financial director, Paul Kessler, was captured.
He negotiated immediately.
Victor had fled with Claire toward a private airfield.
Paul revealed that Victor Rowan was not actually Samuel’s biological son.
He was the child of Evelyn’s first marriage.
Samuel adopted him at six.
Victor learned the truth at eighteen and became obsessed with securing the Rowan legacy before Daniel or Claire could challenge him.
No one had excluded him from the family.
Samuel treated him as his oldest son.
But Victor interpreted shared inheritance as humiliation.
He wanted sole control.
He stole not because he lacked a name.
He stole because he believed love should become ownership.
Federal agents reached the airfield as Victor’s plane began taxiing.
Claire was inside, restrained but alive.
Hope watched the rescue through a secure video feed.
When Claire emerged, thin and injured, Hope pressed both hands against the screen.
“Mom.”
The children were taken to the hospital to reunite with her.
Claire opened her arms.
Hope ran first.
Eli followed.
Grace stood back, uncertain.
Claire waited.
After several seconds, Grace crossed the room.
Daniel remained near the doorway.
Claire looked at him.
For fifteen years, he had imagined this moment.
He expected anger.
Questions.
An embrace.
Instead, she said:
“You got old.”
Daniel laughed and cried at the same time.
“So did you.”
She held out one hand.
He took it.
No dramatic forgiveness was needed.
They were alive in the same room.
That was enough for the first minute.
Victor was arrested on the runway.
His attorney claimed Claire kidnapped herself to frame him.
The plane contained restraints, sedatives, cash, forged passports, and instructions for transporting her overseas.
The lie did not survive the evidence.
But Victor still possessed one dangerous advantage.
He controlled the Rowan voting trust.
If convicted before the board removed him, his attorneys could move company assets offshore and leave victims without compensation.
Daniel needed the original family trust agreement.
The only person who knew where it was hidden was Evelyn.
Their mother’s mind remained fragile after years of medication.
She remembered pieces.
A blue room.
Christmas bells.
A floor that opened.
Daniel brought her to the old Rowan mansion under medical supervision.
Inside the former nursery, they found a compartment beneath the floorboards.
The original trust required removal of any family trustee charged with crimes against children.
Victor’s control ended the moment charges were filed.
Daniel assumed temporary authority.
His first act was transferring the foundation’s properties into a court-supervised victims’ fund.
His second was removing the Rowan name from every children’s facility.
“No child should be required to sleep beneath the name of the man who hurt them,” Claire said.
