Chapter 9 - The Siphon of the Arrogant Suitor

At the grand reception at the Lakefront Country Club that evening, the celebration was radiant and unburdened.
Yet, outside the ballroom, a final shadow of malice was permanently dismantled.
Julian Vance—Victoria’s cousin and the heir to a struggling commercial brokerage—had arrived uninvited, drinking heavily at the bar, muttering bitter remarks to anyone who would listen:
“Claire married a carpenter’s son whose mother looks like a street vendor. Let's see how long his architecture firm survives without Sterling’s money.”
Richard Sterling stepped up to the bar, flanked by two armed security officers.
Richard set a manila folder flat onto the polished marble counter.
“Julian,” Richard said, his voice flat and dangerous.
Julian turned, trying to muster an arrogant smirk. “Uncle Richard! I was just admiring your daughter’s… unconventional tastes.”
“You shouldn't be admiring my daughter, Julian,” Richard replied calmly. “You should be reviewing the forensic audit of your commercial properties.”
Richard opened the folder, displaying certified bank records:
The Falsified Valuations: Julian had inflated the rental yields of his firm's retail developments by 40% to secure commercial loans from Sterling Capital.
The Wedding Tampering: Proof that Julian had paid Victoria $15,000 to rearrange the seating chart to humiliate the Hayes family before the press.
The Immediate Foreclosure: Sterling Capital’s legal division had called in the $8.5 million in delinquent mezzanine debt on Julian’s flagship property.
Julian’s face went completely slack. His champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering across the floorboards.
“Uncle Richard… please! My firm will go bankrupt!”

“Your firm is already bankrupt, Julian,” Richard said with icy finality. “Now get out of this club before I have you arrested for criminal fraud.”
Julian was escorted out the service entrance in total disgrace, stripped of his status, leaving the celebration clean, pure, and triumphant.
