Chapter 6 - The Father of the Bride Awakes

Richard Sterling walked down the aisle, his heavy leather shoes striking the stone floor with slow, deliberate authority.

The billionaire had built his real estate empire with an iron fist, but as he looked at Benjamin kneeling on the runner, clutching his mother’s faded blue skirt, something ancient and long-buried cracked open inside him.

Richard remembered his own mother—a seamstress who had worked eighteen-hour shifts in Queens so he could attend business school. He remembered the smell of sewing machine oil, the threadbare blankets, and the humble pride that had forged his own drive.

Over thirty years of boardrooms and private jets, he had forgotten where his own strength had come from.

He looked at Victoria Vance.

“You’re fired, Victoria,” Richard Sterling said. His voice was not a shout; it was a low, crushing decree that rattled the stained-glass windows.

Victoria gasped. “Mr. Sterling, please! I have coordinated your family’s galas for ten years!”

“You will leave this chapel within sixty seconds,” Richard commanded, turning his back on her. “And tomorrow morning, Sterling Capital will terminate its consulting contracts with your agency.”

Victoria clutched her clipboard to her chest, her face turning crimson with humiliation as she fled through the side exit under the icy glares of the entire assembly.

Richard turned toward me.

The towering tycoon bowed his head, took my hand, and gently kissed my knuckles before four hundred people.

“Forgive me, Sarah,” Richard murmured with deep, genuine humility. “Your son is the finest man who has ever walked into my daughter’s life. And today, I am honored to welcome his mother into my family.”
