Chapter 9 - THE SON WHO CHANGED EVERYTHING

The doctors managed to slow Vivian's contractions.

For forty-eight hours, she remained in the hospital under close observation.

Matteo stayed nearby.

He didn't enter without permission.

Didn't demand updates.

Didn't try to make decisions for her.

When doctors spoke with Vivian, he listened only when she invited him.

It was a small change.

But Vivian noticed.

On the third morning, her condition worsened.

The medical team explained that delivery might become necessary.

Vivian listened carefully.

Asked questions.

Signed the appropriate consent forms.

Matteo stood beside her.

His face was pale.

When the doctor left, Vivian looked at him.

“I'm frightened.”

Matteo nodded.

“So am I.”

She stared.

He had never admitted fear so easily.

He took a breath.

“Whatever happens, I'll follow your wishes.”

Vivian's eyes filled.

“Don't make promises you can't keep.”

He lowered his head.

“Then I'll do my best to prove it.”

Several hours later, their son was born.

Small.

Early.

Fighting.

The medical team cared for him immediately.

Vivian heard a brief cry.

Then she saw him.

Tiny.

Red-faced.

Beautiful.

Her heart broke open.

“Is he okay?” she whispered.

A clinician reassured her that he was receiving the care he needed and would be monitored closely in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Vivian began crying.

Matteo stood beside her.

Tears streamed down his face.

For a moment, he couldn't speak.

Then he whispered, “He's beautiful.”

Vivian nodded.

“Yes.”

Their son weighed just under four pounds.

They named him Elias Thomas Draven.

Elias because Vivian loved the name.

Thomas after her late father.

Matteo didn't argue.

Didn't insist on a family name.

He simply smiled.

“Elias,” he whispered.

Later, Vivian was able to visit the NICU.

She stood beside the incubator, watching her son's tiny chest rise and fall.

Matteo stood a few feet away.

He looked completely lost.

Vivian glanced at him.

“Come closer.”

He approached.

She looked at Elias.

“That's your father, sweetheart.”

Matteo covered his mouth.

His shoulders shook.

Vivian had never seen him cry like that.

Not at funerals.

Not after losing business deals.

Not even when his own father died.

But now, standing beside a premature baby who weighed less than four pounds, Matteo Draven wept openly.

Vivian watched him.

She still loved him.

That was the truth.

But love was not enough.

She had learned that the hard way.

Later, when they were alone, Matteo sat beside her hospital bed.

“Vivian.”

She looked at him.

“I need to say something.”

She waited.

He took a breath.

“I betrayed you.”

Her throat tightened.

“I know.”

“I lied. I controlled you. I made you afraid to disagree with me.”

Tears filled her eyes.

He continued.

“And when you told me you were leaving, I locked you in our bedroom.”

Vivian looked away.

Matteo's voice broke.

“There is no excuse for that.”

She wiped her eyes.

“I was terrified.”

“I know.”

“You looked at our son like he belonged to you.”

Matteo lowered his head.

“I was wrong.”

Vivian began crying.

“I thought you were going to take him.”

He looked up.

“I will never use Elias to punish you.”

She stared.

“Don't promise me things just because you're frightened.”

Matteo nodded.

“Then I'll put it in writing. Through our attorneys. Whatever lawful arrangements protect your rights and his well-being.”

Vivian swallowed.

He continued.

“I've given investigators access to the Blackwater records I control.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

“I'm cooperating.”

“Why?”

Matteo looked toward the NICU corridor.

“Because I don't want my son growing up believing power means never admitting when you're wrong.”

Vivian stared at him.

For the first time, she saw the possibility of a different man.

Not the one she'd married.

Not yet.

May you like

Perhaps not ever.

But someone who had finally understood that fear was not love.
