Chapter 10 - THE PRICE OF A BROKEN EMPIRE

Victor Salerno was arrested six weeks after Elias was born.
The investigation had expanded.
Financial records.
Witness statements.
Recovered communications.
Transactions involving Blackwater Holdings.
Several individuals connected to the scheme were questioned or charged.
Matteo cooperated through his attorneys.
He acknowledged decisions he'd made and records he'd approved.
Some of his businesses came under scrutiny.
Assets were frozen pending review.
Partners withdrew.
Contracts collapsed.
The empire he'd spent fifteen years building began to change.
For the first time, Matteo didn't try to stop every consequence.
He focused on separating legitimate operations from those connected to wrongdoing.
He hired independent compliance officers.
Closed several businesses.
Sold properties.
And established funds to address verified financial harm where appropriate.
People called him weak.
Others called him foolish.
Matteo ignored them.
His son was still in the NICU.
His wife was living separately.
And for the first time in his adult life, he understood that winning every battle could still leave a man with nothing worth keeping.
Vivian visited Elias every day.
She learned how to care for a premature baby.
How to read the monitors.
How to celebrate small milestones.
The first time Elias finished a full feeding.
The first time he gained several ounces.
The first time he wrapped his tiny fingers around hers.
Matteo visited when Vivian agreed.
He never arrived unannounced.
Never demanded access.
Never questioned her medical decisions.
He simply showed up.
Sometimes with coffee.
Sometimes with food.
Sometimes with nothing but tired eyes and a quiet smile.
One afternoon, Vivian found him sitting beside Elias's incubator.
He was reading aloud.
From a children's book.
His voice was low.
Gentle.
Completely unlike the man who used to silence rooms with a glance.
Vivian stopped in the doorway.
Matteo looked up.
“Sorry. I didn't know you were coming.”
She smiled faintly.
“What are you reading?”
“Goodnight Moon.”
She laughed softly.
“He's a little young.”
Matteo looked at Elias.
“I know.”
He hesitated.
“I just wanted him to recognize my voice.”
Vivian's throat tightened.
She sat beside him.
For a while, they watched their son sleep.
Then Matteo said, “I sold the south estate.”
Vivian looked at him.
“What?”
“The one outside Lake Geneva.”
“Why?”
“I don't need it.”
She studied him.
“You loved that property.”
“I loved what it represented.”
“And now?”
He looked toward Elias.
“Now it feels like a monument to things I don't want anymore.”
Vivian was quiet.
Then she asked, “Do you regret losing the money?”
Matteo smiled sadly.
“Sometimes.”
She appreciated the honesty.
He continued.
“But I regret losing your trust more.”
Vivian looked away.
Her eyes filled.
Matteo didn't reach for her.
Didn't ask for forgiveness.
He simply sat beside their son.
May you like
And Vivian began to understand that change wasn't a speech.
It was a thousand choices made when nobody was applauding.
