Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO BUILT A NEW LIFE

By summer, Vivian had returned to work.

Not full-time.

Not immediately.

She began consulting for a small forensic accounting firm in Madison.

The office was modest.

The people were kind.

Nobody cared that she'd once been married to Matteo Draven.

They cared whether she could identify discrepancies in financial statements.

She could.

She had always been good at it.

On her first day, she sat at a desk overlooking a parking lot.

No marble floors.

No security guards.

No chandeliers.

Just a computer, a notebook, and a cup of terrible coffee.

She smiled.

For the first time in years, she felt like herself.

Elias was growing.

He smiled now.

Made little noises.

Grabbed at her hair.

Vivian learned to function on broken sleep and reheated coffee.

She loved every exhausting minute.

Matteo remained involved through their agreed parenting arrangements.

He attended medical appointments when invited.

Paid support through formal channels.

Respected her boundaries.

And never once asked her to return to the estate.

One afternoon, Vivian found him sitting on the floor of her apartment.

Elias lay on a blanket.

Matteo was making ridiculous faces.

The baby giggled.

Vivian stopped in the doorway.

Matteo looked up.

“Don't laugh.”

She smiled.

“I'm not.”

“You are.”

“Maybe a little.”

He looked back at Elias.

“Your mother has no respect for my dignity.”

Elias squealed.

Vivian laughed.

For a moment, they looked like an ordinary family.

The realization hurt.

Because she had wanted that for so long.

Later, while Elias slept, Vivian made tea.

Matteo stood beside the kitchen counter.

“Your new job going well?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“I like it.”

He smiled.

“You were always brilliant at that work.”

Vivian looked at him.

“You didn't used to say that.”

Matteo lowered his head.

“I know.”

She waited.

He continued.

“I think I was afraid of how independent you were.”

Vivian stared.

“Why?”

“Because I thought if you didn't need me, you'd leave.”

Her throat tightened.

“So you made sure I needed you.”

Matteo nodded.

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt.

But it also mattered.

Vivian looked away.

“You nearly destroyed me.”

“I know.”

“I stopped recognizing myself.”

Matteo's eyes filled.

“I know.”

She took a breath.

“I don't know whether I can ever trust you again.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

Vivian studied him.

“And I won't make that decision because you're trying harder now.”

“Good.”

She blinked.

“Good?”

Matteo smiled sadly.

“You deserve to make it because you want to.”

Vivian looked at him for a long moment.

Then she whispered, “That's the first thing you've said in years that makes me believe you understand.”

Matteo's eyes shone.

He nodded.

And for the first time, Vivian wondered whether their story might have another chapter.

Not because she needed him.

May you like

Not because Elias needed his parents married.

But because the man standing in her kitchen was finally learning how to love without controlling.
