Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO FINALLY UNDERSTOOD FEAR

Matteo had spent fifteen years building a reputation around one simple idea.

Nobody touched what belonged to him.

His warehouses.

His businesses.

His territory.

His family.

He had believed fear was the strongest form of protection.

Now his pregnant wife was somewhere in Wisconsin, and another man had apparently been watching her.

For the first time, Matteo understood that fear could also be a prison.

He looked at Luca.

“Did Salerno contact us?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“He wants the Blackwater records.”

Matteo closed his eyes.

Of course.

The records.

Vivian had found them.

She'd asked questions.

He'd told her to stop.

He'd been so focused on controlling what she knew that he'd never considered why she was frightened.

“What did you tell him?” Matteo asked.

“Nothing.”

“Good.”

Matteo walked toward the window.

The estate grounds stretched beneath the gray winter sky.

Somewhere upstairs, Vivian's wedding ring still lay in the drawer where he'd placed it.

He hadn't been able to look at it again.

Luca waited.

“Boss?”

Matteo turned.

“Contact our attorney.”

“About Salerno?”

“About everything.”

Luca frowned.

“Everything?”

“The financial records. The shell companies. The transfers.”

Luca stared.

“Matteo, that could expose us.”

“Yes.”

“People could go to prison.”

“Yes.”

Luca looked shocked.

Matteo's voice hardened.

“Vivian is carrying my son. If those records put her in danger, then the people responsible will answer for it.”

Luca hesitated.

“And you?”

Matteo looked away.

“Me too.”

The words surprised even him.

For years, he had believed accountability was something powerful men imposed on others.

Now he understood that if he wanted any chance of becoming a decent father, he would have to accept it himself.

That afternoon, Matteo met with his attorney.

He disclosed what he knew about Blackwater Holdings.

Not everything was flattering.

Some transactions had been authorized by his father.

Others by business partners.

Several had continued under Matteo's leadership.

He had ignored warning signs.

Signed documents without asking enough questions.

Allowed people like Salerno to remain close because removing them would have been inconvenient.

Now the consequences were arriving.

His attorney listened carefully.

Then said, “You understand this may have serious legal consequences.”

Matteo nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why now?”

Matteo looked at the photograph of Vivian.

“Because my wife was afraid of me.”

The attorney said nothing.

Matteo continued.

“And I gave her reasons to be.”

Meanwhile, Vivian attended another prenatal appointment.

The baby was healthy.

Her blood pressure was slightly elevated.

The doctor recommended rest, hydration, and close monitoring.

Vivian nodded.

She tried to follow the advice.

But every time she closed her eyes, she saw Matteo.

Not the man who kissed Camille.

The man who had once sat beside her hospital bed after their miscarriage.

The man who had cried when they learned this pregnancy was healthy.

The man who used to kiss her stomach every morning.

She hated that she remembered those things.

Hated that love didn't disappear simply because trust had been destroyed.

After the appointment, she sat in Eleanor's car.

“Do you think people can change?” she asked.

Eleanor looked at her.

“Sometimes.”

Vivian stared at the windshield.

“How do you know?”

“You don't know because they promise.”

Vivian swallowed.

“You know because they change even when it costs them something.”

The words stayed with her.

That evening, Daniel called.

“Vivian, Matteo's attorney contacted us.”

Her stomach tightened.

“What does he want?”

“To discuss legal arrangements concerning your separation and the baby.”

Vivian closed her eyes.

“Is he demanding I come back?”

“No.”

She opened her eyes.

“What?”

“His attorney says Matteo will not contest your right to live separately.”

Vivian stared.

“And?”

“He's willing to discuss financial support through formal channels.”

She swallowed.

“Why?”

Daniel hesitated.

“I don't know.”

Vivian looked toward the window.

For the first time, Matteo had apparently accepted a decision she made without him.

It should have relieved her.

May you like

Instead, it made her cry.

Because she wished he had understood that before destroying their marriage.
