Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO ASK

Damian proposed on Clara's birthday.

Not at the estate.

Not at a gala.

Not in front of powerful men.

At Joanne's Kitchen.

After closing.

Clara was cleaning the counter when he entered carrying a small paper bag.

She smiled.

“You're late.”

He looked nervous.

“Traffic.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“You own three cars.”

“None of them control traffic.”

She laughed.

He placed the bag on the counter.

Inside was a small wooden box.

Clara opened it.

A ring.

Simple.

Beautiful.

A delicate gold band with a small diamond.

She stared.

Damian took her hand.

“Clara.”

Her eyes filled.

He smiled nervously.

“I had a speech.”

She laughed.

“Of course you did.”

“I practiced.”

“That's adorable.”

He looked offended.

“I'm not adorable.”

“You are right now.”

He laughed.

Then became serious.

“When I met you, I thought I understood power.”

Clara listened.

“I thought it meant being feared. Being obeyed. Never letting anyone see weakness.”

He swallowed.

“Then you walked into my kitchen and made a pie.”

Clara laughed through tears.

“And you reminded me of a woman who was kinder and braver than anyone in my family.”

His voice trembled.

“You taught me that love isn't control.”

He took a breath.

“It's choosing someone freely.”

Clara's eyes filled.

Damian knelt.

“Clara Hughes, will you marry me?”

She stared.

Then smiled.

“Yes.”

He closed his eyes.

“Really?”

“Really.”

He slipped the ring onto her finger.

Then kissed her.

The bakery lights glowed around them.

The air smelled of cinnamon and brown sugar.

And Clara realized something.

The place she'd built to honor her mother had become the place where she chose her own future.
