Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO BE HIS SECRET

The first time Damian kissed Clara, it happened in the garden.
Not after a rescue.
Not during a crisis.
On an ordinary Sunday afternoon.
They had spent two hours talking about Joanne.
About childhood.
About the books Damian loved.
About the bakery Clara hoped to open someday.
The sun was warm.
The magnolia tree was beginning to bloom.
Damian looked at her.
“Clara.”
“Yes?”
“May I kiss you?”
She smiled.
“Yes.”
The kiss was gentle.
Brief.
Then Clara stepped back.
Damian looked concerned.
“Was that okay?”
She laughed softly.
“Yes.”
“Then why do you look worried?”
She looked toward the mansion.
“Because I work for you.”
His expression changed.
She continued.
“And because people already think I came here to manipulate you.”
Damian looked down.
“Then we need to change that.”
Clara frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“You shouldn't have to depend on my employment to decide whether you want to be with me.”
She stared.
He continued.
“If you want to leave the estate, I'll support your right to do that. If you want to stay employed, we need clear boundaries and independent management.”
Clara smiled sadly.
“I don't want to be another woman whose life is controlled by a Costello.”
Damian nodded.
“Then don't be.”

Two weeks later, Clara resigned from the estate.
Not because Damian asked her to.
Because she'd saved enough money to begin pursuing her own dream.
A bakery.
Small.
Independent.
Her mother's recipes.
Her own name above the door.
Damian offered financial help.
She refused.
He accepted it.
Instead, he helped her find a commercial real estate agent with no connection to his companies.
Clara laughed.
“That's surprisingly useful.”
He smiled.
“I have occasional talents.”

They continued dating.
Slowly.
Carefully.
In public.
At ordinary restaurants.
On walks.
At bookstores.
Clara discovered Damian hated horror movies.
He discovered she loved terrible reality television.
They argued about whether raisins belonged in cookies.
They laughed.
And gradually, their relationship became something neither had expected.
Not a rescue.
May you like
Not a debt.
A choice.
