Chapter 13 - THE VERDICT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Edward Kensington's trial ended in late autumn.
The jury returned guilty verdicts on multiple charges.
The court proceedings established his role in the financial scheme and the conspiracy surrounding Joanne's death.
Clara sat beside Damian as the verdicts were read.
Her hands trembled.
When the final verdict came, she closed her eyes.
For a moment, she heard her mother's voice.
Always taste the filling twice.
Never rush the crust.
Don't let anyone tell you kindness is weakness.
Clara began crying.
Damian took her hand.
She squeezed it.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.
Clara didn't answer.
She walked past them.
Into the sunlight.
Then stopped.
For twenty years, her mother's name had been connected to theft.
Now the truth was public.
Joanne Hughes had not been a criminal.
She had been a witness.
A protector.
A woman who risked everything to keep a child safe.
***
Damian arranged for a public statement correcting the false accusation against Joanne.
The Costello estate's historical records were amended.
Her employment file was corrected.
And a scholarship was established in her name for students pursuing culinary training.
Clara insisted that the scholarship be independently administered.
Damian agreed.

That evening, Clara returned to the bakery.
She unlocked the door.
Turned on the lights.
And placed her mother's photograph beside the register.
Then she whispered:
“We did it, Mom.”

For the first time, the words didn't feel like a question.
They felt like peace.
