Chapter 10 - THE BOSS WHO WALKED INTO COURT

Edward Kensington was arrested six weeks later.

The charges included offenses connected to financial fraud, obstruction, and Joanne Hughes's death.

The case attracted national attention.

Reporters gathered outside the courthouse.

Old photographs resurfaced.

Richard Costello's name appeared in headlines.

Damian's companies came under scrutiny.

For the first time in years, the Costello empire looked vulnerable.

***

Damian could have fought to protect the family's reputation.

He could have buried records.

Intimidated witnesses.

Used money to delay proceedings.

Instead, he cooperated.

He provided documents.

Allowed independent audits.

And accepted that the investigation might expose wrongdoing inside businesses he had inherited.

Clara watched from a distance.

She respected his choice.

But she also knew it was his responsibility.

Not a gift to her.

***

At a hearing, Damian testified about the ledger.

He described Joanne's role.

The accusations.

The documents.

The discovery.

When asked why he'd come forward, he paused.

Then said:

“Because a woman was punished for protecting a child.”

The courtroom fell silent.

He continued.

“That child was me.”

Clara sat in the gallery.

Her eyes filled.

Damian looked toward her.

Then returned his attention to the attorney.

“And I should have learned the truth years ago.”

***

The proceedings continued for months.

Evidence was challenged.

Witnesses testified.

Financial records were examined.

Clara learned that justice was not a single dramatic moment.

It was slow.

Complicated.

Sometimes painful.

But the truth was finally being heard.

***

One evening, Damian found Clara in the garden.

She was sitting beneath the magnolia tree.

He approached.

“May I join you?”

She smiled.

“You always ask.”

He sat.

“I've learned it's a good habit.”

They watched the sunset.

Then Clara said:

“I don't know what happens after the trial.”

Damian nodded.

“Neither do I.”

She looked at him.

“Your business could change.”

“Yes.”

“Your reputation.”

“Yes.”

“Your whole life.”

He smiled faintly.

“Probably.”

Clara studied him.

“Are you afraid?”

Damian considered.

“Yes.”

She looked surprised.

He continued.

“But I'm more afraid of becoming my father.”

Silence.

May you like

Then Clara took his hand.

“You don't have to.”
