Chapter 3 - The Cold Pavement

I didn't run with hesitation. I sprinted with every ounce of adrenaline coursing through my pregnant body, one arm cradling my swollen belly to absorb the shock of each pounding step against the pavement.
Behind me, the violent crash of the front door rebounding against the wall shook the morning air.
"Elena!" Julian’s roar stripped away every veneer of suburban civility. It was the raw, predatory sound of a monster whose cage had just been broken from the inside.
I didn't turn back. I had mapped this route in my head during dozens of sleepless nights. The main road was two hundred yards away, but the residential cul-de-sac was designed to trap people. Instead of heading toward the open street where he could run me down with his SUV, I cut directly through Mrs. Gable’s overgrown hydrangeas, vaulting past the side wooden gate into the narrow pedestrian alleyway connecting the subdivisions.
Branches tore at my jacket. The sharp impact of gravel sent stinging jolts through my ankles, but pain was nothing compared to the ice-cold memory of a wet towel over my face.
Behind me, heavy footsteps crushed the dry leaves. He was fast, fueled by the rage of losing control.
"Stop right there! You're having an episode, Elena! Someone help her!" Julian yelled, already manufacturing his narrative for any neighbor peering through blinds.
I reached the mouth of the alley. Ahead lay the bustling four-lane avenue where city buses ran every eight minutes. A transit bus was just pulling up to the curb, its pneumatic brakes hissing loudly.
I lunged out of the alley, throwing myself onto the bus steps just as the folding doors began to close.
"Ma'am, wait—" the driver started, startled by my disheveled appearance.
"Drive! Please, just drive!" I gasped, pressing against the partition.
Through the glass doors, I saw Julian burst onto the sidewalk, chest heaving, his face contorted in vicious rage before instantly smoothing into an expression of frantic concern as passersby turned to look at him. He raised a hand, pretending to wave in distress, but his eyes locked onto mine through the tinted glass.

In his eyes was a promise of total destruction.
The bus accelerated into the traffic stream, carrying me away into the anonymity of the city.
