Chapter 7 - THE GALA PHOTOGRAPH THAT EXPOSED EVERYTHING

The photograph appeared in a business magazine.
It showed Madeline Hayes standing beside Ethan at the year-end gala.
She wore the wine-red gown.
He wore a black tuxedo.
They looked like a couple.
The caption described Madeline as "a longtime confidante and potential future partner of Caldwell Global's chief executive."
Olivia saw it while waiting for coffee.
She stared at the page.
Then closed the magazine.
It shouldn't have hurt.
But it did.
Seven years earlier, Olivia had fallen in love with Ethan.
Not all at once.
Not dramatically.
It happened through small moments.
The way he remembered her mother's birthday.
The way he stayed late with her during a difficult acquisition.
The way he once drove across Chicago in a snowstorm because she'd mentioned she was sick.
For a while, she thought he might feel the same.
Then Madeline returned.
And Ethan became distant.
Olivia told herself she'd imagined everything.
Now, looking at the photograph, she realized something.
She had spent seven years waiting for a man who had never asked her to wait.
That afternoon, Ethan called.
She answered.
"Hello."
"Olivia."
His voice sounded tired.
"I saw the article."
"So did I."
He hesitated.
"It's misleading."
Olivia looked out the window.
"Then correct it."
Silence.
He swallowed.
"You're right."
The next morning, Caldwell Global issued a statement clarifying that Madeline had no executive role or authority within the company.
Ethan also requested an independent review of the gala transportation arrangements.
The results confirmed that Madeline had canceled Olivia's assigned car without authorization.
Ethan called Madeline into his office.
He placed the report on the desk.
"Explain."
Madeline glanced at it.
Then laughed.
"You're seriously investigating a car?"
Ethan's expression remained cold.
"I'm investigating why someone used an executive account to remove an employee from an event she organized."
Madeline rolled her eyes.
"Ethan, she was obsessed with you."
He stared.
"What?"
Madeline leaned forward.
"Everyone knew it. She followed you everywhere. She acted like your wife."
Ethan felt sick.
"She was doing her job."
Madeline laughed.
"Exactly. And you let her."
He looked down.
For the first time, he understood the cruelty of that sentence.
Because Madeline was right about one thing.
He had let Olivia give him everything.
Without ever asking what it cost her.
He looked up.
"Leave."
Madeline stared.
"Excuse me?"
"Leave my office."
Her expression hardened.
"You'll regret this."
May you like
Ethan shook his head.
"I already regret enough."
