Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO FINALLY UNDERSTOOD HER WORTH

Their relationship changed slowly.
They began having dinner.
Then coffee.
Then long conversations that had nothing to do with work.
Ethan learned that Olivia loved old bookstores.
That she hated expensive flowers.
That she wanted to visit Italy.
And that she had always dreamed of writing a book.
Olivia learned that Ethan had spent much of his life trying to impress his father.
That he feared failure.
That he had mistaken constant achievement for happiness.
They talked about the past.
The mistakes.
The hurt.
Ethan didn't ask her to forget.
Olivia didn't pretend everything was fine.
But gradually, trust returned.
Not the old trust.
Something more honest.
One evening, they walked along the Chicago River.
Snow drifted through the streetlights.
Ethan stopped.
"Olivia."
She turned.
"Yes?"
"I've been wanting to ask you something."
She smiled faintly.
"That sounds dangerous."
He laughed.
Then grew serious.
"Would you consider building a future with me?"
Olivia looked at him.
"Ethan."
He shook his head.
"Not because you work for me."
She smiled.
"I don't."
He laughed softly.
"Exactly."
He took a breath.
"Not because I need you to manage my life."
She studied him.
"Then why?"
His eyes filled.
"Because I love the woman you are when you're free to be yourself."
Olivia swallowed.
He continued.
"And because I want to be someone who adds to your life instead of consuming it."
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Then she stepped closer.
"That's the first thing you've said that makes me believe we might have a chance."
Ethan smiled.
"Really?"
She nodded.
"Really."
He reached for her hand.
She let him take it.
And beneath the falling snow, they kissed.
May you like
Not because the past had disappeared.
But because they had finally learned how to move beyond it.
