Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO LEFT A SECOND LETTER

The legal challenge lasted six weeks.
Madeline's attorneys argued that Richard Caldwell had been confused and vulnerable when he amended the trust.
Rachel produced medical evaluations.
Witness statements.
And a recorded meeting in which Richard explained his decision.
In the recording, Richard sat behind his desk.
His voice was weaker than Olivia remembered.
But his mind was clear.
"I am appointing Olivia Mercer because she understands the company better than most of the people who claim to run it."
Olivia covered her mouth.
Richard continued.
"My son is intelligent. Ambitious. Capable."
He paused.
"But he has confused loyalty with availability."
Olivia began crying.
Richard looked directly into the camera.
"Olivia, if you're watching this, I hope you've finally learned that your life belongs to you."
The room was silent when the recording ended.
Rachel handed Olivia a tissue.
Olivia wiped her face.
Then whispered:
"He knew."
Rachel nodded.
"He did."
The court rejected the attempt to invalidate the appointment.
Olivia's position as trustee remained intact.
Madeline was furious.
Ethan was shaken.
He had watched the recording too.
And for the first time, he heard his father describe the damage he'd done to someone who had spent seven years protecting him.
That evening, Ethan visited his father's grave.
He stood beneath the bare trees.
For a long time, he said nothing.
Then whispered:
"I didn't know."
The wind moved through the branches.
He looked down.
"No."
His voice broke.
"I didn't want to know."
Back at headquarters, Ethan began reviewing employee workloads.
He met with department heads.
Asked uncomfortable questions.
And discovered that Olivia's experience was not unusual.
People were working through weekends.
Managers were rewarding visibility rather than results.
And several employees had been quietly searching for other jobs.
Ethan called a board meeting.
He proposed an independent workplace review.
Some directors objected.
He insisted.
For the first time, he was trying to fix a problem without asking Olivia to do the work for him.
But the most difficult conversation was still ahead.
May you like
Because Madeline had begun telling people that Olivia had manipulated Richard into giving her control.
And Ethan finally had to decide whether he would remain silent.
