Chapter 13 - THE SECOND INVITATION

A year after the gala, Caldwell Global held another year-end celebration.

This time, Olivia received an invitation addressed to:

Ms. Olivia Mercer, Trustee, Employee Stewardship Trust.

She smiled.

Then checked the transportation arrangements.

Her name was on the manifest.

Car number twelve.

She laughed.

Rachel Kim called.

"Are you going?"

Olivia considered.

"Yes."

"Are you nervous?"

"A little."

Rachel smiled through the phone.

"Good. Means it matters."

On the night of the gala, Olivia wore a dark green gown.

She arrived in her own car.

Not because she lacked transportation.

Because she wanted the freedom to leave whenever she chose.

The venue glittered with lights.

Music drifted through the ballroom.

Employees mingled with executives.

Ethan stood near the entrance.

He saw her immediately.

For a moment, he simply stared.

Then he approached.

"Olivia."

She smiled.

"Ethan."

He looked at her.

"You look beautiful."

"Thank you."

He hesitated.

"I'm glad you came."

She nodded.

"So am I."

They stood quietly.

Then Ethan said:

"Would you like to dance?"

Olivia looked toward the ballroom.

For seven years, she'd watched other people dance while she solved problems.

Now she had no headset.

No clipboard.

No emergency phone.

She smiled.

"Yes."

Ethan offered his hand.

May you like

She took it.

And for the first time, they danced as equals.
