Chapter 9 - THE MAN WHO STOLE THREE YEARS

Victor Hale was arrested after investigators obtained evidence connecting him to unauthorized medical decisions, falsified records, and financial misconduct.
The investigation also uncovered communications between Victor and a private clinic involved in Dante's treatment.
The implant had been placed during a procedure after the bombing.
Records showed that Dante had not been properly informed about it.
The purpose of the device remained part of the criminal investigation.
But the broader scheme was becoming clear.
Victor had used Dante's genuine injuries as an opportunity to expand his own control.
For three years, Victor had managed Dante's appointments.
Controlled access to medical information.
Influenced medication decisions.
And repeatedly told Dante that his confusion made him incapable of handling certain responsibilities.
During that time, Victor had gained increasing authority over Moretti assets.
He had redirected funds through shell companies.
Approved questionable transactions.
And arranged legal documents that would have expanded his influence if Dante were declared incapacitated.
When Dante learned the extent of the scheme, he sat silently in his hospital room.
Rachel Donovan placed the documents on the table.
“There's more.”
Dante looked up.
“What?”
“Victor was preparing to petition for expanded control over your affairs.”
Dante stared.
“On what grounds?”
“Medical incapacity.”
He closed his eyes.
Three years.
Three years of headaches.
Confusion.
Dependence.
And someone had been preparing to use those symptoms to take away his remaining independence.
That evening, Dante asked Rachel one question.
“Did Isabella know?”
Rachel hesitated.
“We're still reviewing her involvement.”
Dante looked toward the window.
For the first time, he wasn't sure which possibility hurt more.
May you like
That Isabella had betrayed him.
Or that she'd been manipulated too.
