Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH INSIDE THE SCAR

The object was removed two weeks later.
Not in a secret room.
Not by a mysterious surgeon.
In a hospital operating theater, after Dr. Chen and her colleagues determined that removal could be performed with acceptable risk.
Dante signed the consent forms himself.
Victor had no role in the decision.
When Dante woke, Dr. Chen explained the findings.
The object was a small manufactured implant.
It had a casing and internal components.
Its exact purpose required forensic examination.
It was not a typical piece of shrapnel.
Dante stared.
“Someone put it there?”
Dr. Chen nodded carefully.
“The surgical findings are consistent with deliberate placement, but investigators will need to establish when and by whom.”
Dante closed his eyes.
For three years, he'd carried something beneath his skin that nobody had properly explained.
The forensic examination later identified the object as a modified implantable electronic device.
Investigators found that it was not capable of reading thoughts or controlling decisions.
But it had been designed to store limited information and interact with nearby equipment under specific conditions.
The discovery raised serious questions about why it had been implanted without Dante's informed consent.
Dr. Chen also explained that the device alone did not account for all his symptoms.
His medication history required careful review.
An independent clinical team examined the prescriptions he'd been taking.
They found evidence that some medications had been prescribed or administered in combinations that could contribute to sedation, confusion, and memory problems.
Dante was furious.
But the doctors warned him not to stop everything suddenly.
They developed a supervised plan to adjust his treatment safely.
Over the following weeks, his thinking gradually became clearer.
Not overnight.
Not perfectly.
But enough that he began recognizing how often he'd been told he was too ill to make decisions.
Detective Ruiz visited him in the hospital.
“We have the device,” she said.
Dante nodded.
“And the medication records?”
“Under review.”
He looked at her.
“Who did this?”
Ruiz hesitated.
“We have evidence pointing toward people in your household.”
Dante's jaw tightened.
“Victor.”
Ruiz met his eyes.
“I'm not going to name suspects before the evidence supports it.”
Dante nodded.

Then whispered:
“Find the truth.”
