Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO SAW THE MAN

Anna had never expected to become important to Dante Moretti.

She was a housekeeper.

A single mother.

A woman who had spent years working quietly to give her daughter a stable life.

Dante was wealthy.

Powerful.

Complicated.

And surrounded by people who wanted something from him.

But after the investigation, their conversations changed.

Dante began asking Anna about her life.

Not as an employer evaluating an employee.

As a man trying to understand the woman who had helped him.

She told him about her late husband, Michael, who had died in a construction accident when Sophie was two.

She told him about the years she'd spent balancing childcare and work.

And about her dream of returning to medical administration.

Dante listened.

Then asked:

“Why didn't you?”

Anna smiled sadly.

“Life happened.”

He nodded.

“I understand that.”

Anna eventually accepted a position at a rehabilitation clinic.

The job was arranged through her own application and qualifications, not through Dante's influence.

She left the Moretti household on good terms.

Dante was surprised by how much he missed her.

Not because she managed his home.

Because she spoke to him honestly.

She didn't flatter him.

Didn't fear his name.

And didn't pretend he was always right.

Months later, Dante invited Anna and Sophie to a community fundraiser supporting families affected by workplace injuries.

Anna hesitated.

“Is this a date?”

Dante smiled.

“I was hoping it could be.”

She looked at him.

“Dante, I don't want Sophie confused.”

He nodded.

“Then we take our time.”

Anna studied him.

“And your past?”

He looked down.

“I'm dealing with it.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

Then she smiled.

“One dinner.”

May you like

Dante grinned.

“One dinner.”
