Chapter 8 - THE NURSE WHO LOST HER BADGE

I was suspended on a Friday morning.

Mallory delivered the notice.

“Pending investigation into professional conduct.”

I stared at her.

“What conduct?”

“Unauthorized documentation changes. Disruptive behavior. Failure to follow chain of command.”

I felt cold.

“I documented a patient assessment and escalated safety concerns.”

Mallory looked away.

“That's not how administration sees it.”

Security escorted me to my locker.

I removed my badge.

My stethoscope.

A photograph of my mother.

Then I walked out.

Outside, rain fell steadily.

I stood beneath the hospital awning, holding a cardboard box.

For the first time since nursing school, I wondered whether I'd made a terrible mistake.

A black sedan stopped at the curb.

The passenger window lowered.

Evelyn Reed sat inside.

“Noelle.”

I stared.

“Mrs. Reed?”

She opened the door.

“Get in. It's raining.”

I hesitated.

Then climbed inside.

Nathaniel sat beside her.

He looked at my box.

Then at my face.

His expression hardened.

They suspended you?

I nodded.

He took out his phone.

Typed something.

Then showed me the screen.

THEY PICKED THE WRONG NURSE.

I laughed through tears.

Evelyn looked at me.

“My husband has spent thirty years fighting for people who were told to stay quiet.”

May you like

She smiled.

“He's not starting now.”
