Chapter 3 - THE NURSE THEY TRIED TO SILENCE

By morning, the entire hospital knew what had happened.

Some people called me brave.

Others called me reckless.

Mallory called me into her office at seven.

Dr. Grant Hale was waiting.

He sat beside the window with a folder on his lap.

“Miss Hart,” he said, “we need to discuss your conduct.”

I sat.

Mallory folded her hands.

“You created unnecessary confusion around a VIP patient.”

I stared.

“Colonel Reed had untreated pain and an undocumented communication barrier.”

Grant sighed.

“Patients can be difficult.”

“He wasn't difficult. He was deaf.”

Mallory's expression tightened.

“Watch your tone.”

I took a breath.

Then said carefully, “I'm asking that we review the inaccurate documentation and consent record.”

Grant leaned forward.

“Are you accusing staff of falsifying records?”

“I'm reporting discrepancies that require investigation.”

Silence.

Mallory opened my employee file.

“You're still on probation.”

“I understand.”

“Your scholarship doesn't make you special.”

“I never said it did.”

Grant smiled.

“Then perhaps you should learn how things work here.”

I looked at him.

“Is that what happened to Colonel Reed?”

His smile vanished.

After the meeting, I found an email waiting in my inbox.

MANDATORY PERFORMANCE REVIEW.

Scheduled for the following morning.

I stared at the screen.

Then opened a blank document.

I began writing down everything I remembered.

Dates.

Times.

Names.

Exact statements.

Not because I wanted a fight.

Because I knew what happened when people with power controlled the story.

At noon, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice spoke.

“Is this Noelle Hart?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Evelyn Reed.”

I stood.

“Colonel Reed's wife?”

“Yes.”

Her voice trembled.

“My husband told me what you did.”

I swallowed.

“How is he?”

“Stable. The doctors are treating the complication.”

I closed my eyes in relief.

Then Evelyn said something unexpected.

“Noelle, my husband wants you to know that he was admitted under unusual circumstances.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“He wasn't supposed to be at that hospital.”

My pulse quickened.

“Why was he there?”

Evelyn hesitated.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Because someone changed his transfer paperwork.”
