Chapter 14 - THE COLONEL'S LAST MISSION

Nathaniel invited me to speak at a veterans' advocacy conference.

I was terrified.

He thought that was funny.

Before the event, he handed me a small card.

On it, he'd written:

YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW TO LISTEN. NOW LET THEM HEAR YOU.

I smiled.

The conference hall was filled with veterans, caregivers, clinicians, and advocates.

Qualified interpreters stood near the stage.

Captions appeared on large screens.

I stepped to the microphone.

“My name is Noelle Hart.”

I took a breath.

“I'm a nurse.”

Then I told them about Room Nine.

Not the private details.

Not the sensational parts.

But the lesson.

That communication is not optional.

That patients are not difficult because we haven't learned how to understand them.

That dignity is part of care.

When I finished, the room rose in applause.

Nathaniel stood beside Evelyn.

He raised both hands.

And signed:

Proud of you.

I began crying.

May you like

Then smiled.

Because for the first time, I understood that my voice could help change more than one room.
