Chapter 6 - THE VETERAN WHO COULD READ LIPS

Nathaniel was discharged from the higher-acuity unit after his condition improved.
With Evelyn's permission and hospital approval, I visited him during my day off.
A certified interpreter joined us remotely for the discussion.
Nathaniel smiled when he saw me.
The troublemaker returns.
I laughed.
Apparently that's my new title.
He looked more comfortable.
His pain was better controlled.
His breathing had improved.
Then he became serious.
I need to tell you something.
I nodded.
I'm listening.
Nathaniel explained that he had noticed people entering his room when they believed he couldn't understand them.
Some assumed that because he was deaf, he couldn't read lips or recognize expressions.
They discussed his records in front of him.
One man had mentioned Sentinel's billing investigation.
Another had said that Nathaniel's complaint needed to be “closed before the board meeting.”
I frowned.
Did you recognize them?
He nodded.
Grant Hale.
My stomach tightened.
Anyone else?
Nathaniel hesitated.
Then signed:
The hospital director.
I stared.
Richard Bellamy?
Nathaniel nodded.
He reached into his bedside drawer.
Inside was a small notebook.
He opened it.
Dates.
Times.
Descriptions.
He had been documenting everything.
On the final page, he'd written:
THEY THINK SILENCE MEANS IGNORANCE.
I looked up.
Nathaniel's expression was steady.
I need you to understand something, Noelle.
I nodded.
I'm not helpless.
My eyes filled.
I know.
May you like
He smiled faintly.
Then help me make sure they can't do this to someone else.
