Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED THE DIAMOND BRACELET

Alessandro tried to thank Meline with jewelry.
It was a mistake.
He presented her with a small velvet box after dinner.
Inside was a diamond bracelet.
Meline stared.
Then closed the box.
“No.”
Alessandro blinked.
“Excuse me?”
“I can't accept this.”
“It's a gift.”
“I know.”
“Then what's the problem?”
Meline looked at him.
“Do you think kindness is something people sell?”
His expression changed.
“No.”
“Then why are you trying to pay me for treating your father decently?”
Alessandro was silent.
Meline took a breath.
“I appreciate the thought.”
She pushed the box toward him.
“But I don't want to become another person in this house who waits for your approval before deciding what's right.”
Alessandro looked at the bracelet.
Then laughed softly.
“You really don't care who I am.”
Meline smiled.
“I care.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“I just don't think it makes you better than everyone else.”
He closed the box.
“Fair.”
Later, Giovanni found Alessandro sitting alone in the library.
“What happened?”
Alessandro showed him the bracelet.
Giovanni laughed.
“She refused?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Alessandro stared.
“Good?”
Giovanni smiled.
“She has sense.”
The next morning, Alessandro approached Meline again.
No jewelry.
No envelope.
Just a question.
“Would you have coffee with me after your shift?”
Meline looked up.
“Coffee?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He hesitated.
“Because I'd like to know you better.”
She studied him.
Then smiled.
“Ask me again when I'm not your employee.”
Alessandro went still.
Meline continued.
“I won't date someone who controls my paycheck and my housing.”
He nodded slowly.
“You're right.”
That evening, Alessandro asked the estate's human-resources director to review the employment structure.
Meline was offered the option of transferring to an independently managed hospitality role with secure housing arrangements and no reporting relationship to Alessandro.
She considered it carefully.
Then chose a different path.
She applied for a position at a community elder-care organization.
When she told Giovanni, he looked disappointed.
“Will you still visit?”
Meline smiled.
“If you want me to.”
He took her hand.
May you like
“Very much.”
And Alessandro realized that if he wanted a place in Meline's life, he would have to earn it without using his power.
