Chapter 14 - THE WEDDING WHERE THE OLD MAN SAT AT THE HEAD TABLE

Their wedding took place in the Moretti garden.
Not in the grand ballroom.
Not in a cathedral filled with strangers.
But beneath the old oak tree.
Meline wore an ivory gown designed specifically for her.
It fit beautifully.
It celebrated her curves.
And she felt more confident than she ever had.
Her grandfather's photograph was placed beside the ceremony flowers.
Giovanni insisted on carrying a small silver charm that had belonged to Arthur Pierce.
He wanted Meline to feel that both grandfathers were present.
When Meline walked down the aisle, Alessandro stood beneath the tree.
His eyes filled with tears.
Giovanni sat in the front row.
He wore a dark suit.
His walking stick rested beside him.
And he looked happier than anyone had seen him in years.
The ceremony began.
Alessandro promised love.
Respect.
Honesty.
And a life where Meline would never need to make herself smaller to be accepted.
Meline promised patience.
Truth.
Partnership.
And the courage to remind Alessandro when he forgot what mattered.
When the officiant pronounced them married, Alessandro kissed her.
The guests applauded.
Giovanni stood.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Then raised his walking stick.
“To the woman who brought this family back to the table!”
Everyone laughed.
Meline cried.
At the reception, Giovanni sat at the head table.
Not because he demanded it.
Because everyone wanted him there.
Later, Meline danced with Alessandro beneath strings of warm lights.
He looked at her.
“Happy?”
She smiled.
“Very.”
He kissed her forehead.
“Good.”
Across the garden, Giovanni laughed with friends.
