Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO BUILT A TABLE FOR EVERYONE
Meline's new job was at the Harbor House Senior Center.
The building stood near the lake.
It served older adults who needed meals, companionship, transportation, and support.
Meline loved it.
She organized lunches.
Helped coordinate volunteers.
And introduced a simple rule.
Nobody ate alone unless they wanted to.
The center's director, Eleanor Brooks, noticed her talent immediately.
“You have a gift,” she said.
Meline smiled.
“I just like feeding people.”
Eleanor laughed.
“It's more than that.”
One afternoon, Giovanni visited.
He arrived with Alessandro.
Meline greeted him warmly.
“Mr. Giovanni!”
He smiled.
“Still trying to feed the entire city?”
“Working on it.”
They joined a communal lunch.
Giovanni sat beside a retired schoolteacher.
Alessandro sat across from a former bus driver.
Nobody cared about the Moretti name.
They cared whether the soup was hot.
For the first time in years, Alessandro watched his father laugh freely with strangers.
After lunch, Eleanor asked Alessandro whether his company might consider supporting the center's accessibility improvements.
He agreed to review a formal proposal through the organization's normal process.
Meline watched him carefully.
Later, she said:
“Thank you for not turning that into a spectacle.”
Alessandro smiled.
“I'm learning.”
They walked beside the lake.
The wind was cold.
Meline tucked her hands into her coat pockets.
Alessandro looked at her.
“Would you have dinner with me?”
She smiled.
“Are you asking as my former employer?”
“No.”
“As Giovanni's son?”
He laughed.
“Unfortunately, yes.”
She grinned.
“And as a man who likes me?”
His expression softened.
“Very much.”
Meline's heart raced.
Then she nodded.
“Yes.”
Their first date took place at a small neighborhood restaurant.
No private room.
No bodyguards at the table.
No expensive gifts.
Just conversation.
