Chapter 12 - THE TRUTH THAT COST A FORTUNE

The investigations into Vincent's activities continued for months.

Financial records revealed fraudulent transactions.

Witnesses provided testimony.

Authorities examined possible links to older criminal networks.

Vincent faced charges related to financial misconduct and conspiracy.

Beatrice's case proceeded separately.

Both had legal representation.

Both disputed portions of the allegations.

The process was difficult for the Moretti family.

News outlets revived stories about Giovanni's past.

Business partners demanded explanations.

Some contracts were suspended.

Alessandro could have responded the way his family once did.

With threats.

Intimidation.

And private retaliation.

Instead, he cooperated with the legal process.

He expanded independent oversight of the family's legitimate companies.

And began dismantling the remaining unlawful operations.

The transition cost millions.

Several longtime associates left.

Some relationships ended.

But Alessandro continued.

One evening, Meline found him sitting alone in his office.

He looked exhausted.

She sat beside him.

“Bad day?”

He laughed without humor.

“Expensive day.”

She smiled.

“Those are different things.”

He looked at her.

“Not always.”

She took his hand.

“Do you regret it?”

He considered.

“No.”

“Then perhaps it was worth the price.”

He looked at her.

“You make everything sound simple.”

Meline shook her head.

“No.”

She smiled sadly.

“I just think some things are worth doing even when they're hard.”

Alessandro leaned closer.

“Like loving me?”

Meline laughed.

“Especially that.”

He kissed her.

Softly.

Carefully.

And for the first time in years, Alessandro Moretti felt that the future might belong to him rather than to the mistakes of his family.
