Chapter 6 - THE SECRET BENEATH THE HIGHWAY
Three years earlier, Adrian's car had been forced off an icy Wisconsin highway.
His driver, Daniel Brooks, died at the scene.
Adrian survived with a spinal cord injury.
The official investigation concluded that the crash was caused by a rival organization.
Adrian never believed it.
He suspected someone inside his family had provided the route.
Now, reviewing the old security files, I noticed something strange.
The route had been changed forty minutes before departure.
Only four people knew.
Adrian.
His driver.
Marcus Kane.
And Victor Vale.
I stared at the report.
Then looked at Adrian.
“Did Victor know?”
His expression changed.
“Yes.”
I swallowed.
“And Marcus?”
“Yes.”
I looked toward the window.
“Then someone close to you may have betrayed you.”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“I've suspected that for years.”
I looked at him.
“Why didn't you investigate?”
His eyes darkened.
“I did.”
A pause.
“Two investigators disappeared.”
My stomach dropped.
He looked at me.
“Claire, this is why I told you to stay away from Victor.”
I stared.
Then whispered:
“Maybe that's why he wants you removed.”
Adrian said nothing.
I continued.
“Because if you stay in power, eventually you'll find out what happened.”
His eyes held mine.
