Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH ABOUT ADRIAN VALE

Six months later, Adrian began restructuring his empire.

He stepped away from the criminal operations.

Transferred legitimate businesses into independently governed companies.

Cooperated with authorities where required.

And began building a future that didn't depend on fear.

It wasn't easy.

Some men resisted.

Others threatened.

But Adrian was determined.

One evening, we sat beside the lake.

The sunset turned the water gold.

He looked at me.

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“Do you regret marrying me?”

I smiled.

“Which part?”

He laughed.

“The dangerous family?”

“Sometimes.”

“The enormous house?”

“Never.”

He smiled.

“The wheelchair?”

I looked at him.

Then gently took his hand.

“Adrian.”

His eyes held mine.

“I married a man.”

A pause.

“Not a pair of legs.”

His expression changed.

I continued.

“You're stubborn.”

He smiled.

“True.”

“Controlling.”

“Occasionally.”

“Terrible at crossword puzzles.”

He laughed.

“Cruel.”

I smiled.

“And kind when you think nobody's watching.”

His eyes softened.

“Claire.”

I leaned closer.

“I love all of you.”

He closed his eyes.

Then kissed my hand.

And for the first time, Adrian Vale seemed completely at peace with himself.
