Chapter 10 - THE BETRAYAL BEHIND THE WHEELCHAIR

The truth about the highway attack emerged in November.
Marcus Kane discovered an encrypted communication between Victor Vale and a rival security contractor.
The messages were dated three days before Adrian's crash.
They discussed the route.
The weather.
And the timing of a planned interception.
Adrian stared at the documents.
His expression was terrifyingly calm.
Victor had betrayed him.
Not because of the wheelchair.
But because he wanted control of the empire.
The attack was supposed to kill Adrian.
Instead, it left him alive.
And more difficult to remove.
Victor had spent three years trying to finish what he started.
Adrian called an emergency council meeting.
I sat beside him.
Victor arrived smiling.
Then saw the documents.
His smile vanished.
Adrian looked at him.
“Three years.”
Victor said nothing.
Adrian continued.
“Three years you let me believe my driver died because of a rival family.”
Victor swallowed.
“Adrian.”
“You arranged the attack.”
Silence.
Victor looked around the table.
No one spoke.
Adrian leaned forward.
“You killed Daniel Brooks.”
Victor's face twisted.
“I built this family!”
Adrian's eyes darkened.
“And you destroyed it.”
The council voted unanimously to remove Victor from all positions.
Adrian turned the evidence over to federal investigators.

And I knew that choice had cost him more than anyone in the room understood.
