Chapter 8 - The Golden Cage ShutsThree months later, the walls of justice closed with absolute finality.

Faced with an overwhelming mountain of forensic audits, DNA proof, hospital audio logs, and the testimony of Nurse Chloe, the defense team collapsed. To avoid the death penalty on federal kidnapping and attempted murder charges, Raymond and Cordelia signed comprehensive plea agreements.
The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity for sentencing.
Judge Harrison looked down from the bench with zero mercy.
“Raymond Brooks, for the crimes of Federal Kidnapping, Aggravated Identity Theft, Procurement Fraud, and Attempted First-Degree Murder, you are sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole at ADX Florence Federal Penitentiary.”
Raymond slumped into his chair, his eyes glassy, his spirit entirely broken.
“Cordelia Brooks, for your active participation in child abduction, elder healthcare fraud, and attempted unlawful anatomical harvesting, you are sentenced to thirty-five years in federal prison at FMC Carswell.”
Cordelia sobbed so violently she had to be physically supported by two marshals as she was led toward the holding cells.
Then Judge Harrison turned to Julian Brooks.
“Julian Brooks, for Aggravated Vehicular Assault while Intoxicated, Conspiracy to Commit Insurance Fraud, and Reckless Endangerment, you are sentenced to twelve years in state prison, followed by complete financial restitution of $450,000.”
Julian looked up at me from the defense table. His designer clothes were gone, replaced by a drab prison uniform. His arrogant smirk was replaced by the hollow, haunted look of a man who had lost everything.
“Elena,” he mouthed silently through the glass partition, tears streaming down his stubbled cheeks. “I’m sorry...”
I looked back at him, sitting beside Madeline with my head held high.

I didn't utter a word. Some debts cannot be settled with hollow courtroom apologies. The golden boy who had stepped on my back for thirty years was finally going to learn what it meant to carry his own weight.
As the heavy iron door slammed shut behind them, the dark chapter of the Brooks family ended forever.
