Chapter 6 - The Forensic ReckoningTwo weeks later, fully discharged from the hospital, I sat in the grand executive boardroom of Sterling Global Holdings on the 48th floor of the Manhattan skyline.

Dressed in a bespoke emerald-green suit that matched my eyes, with my hair elegantly pinned, I looked like what I was: a senior forensic accountant and the sole heir to a five-billion-dollar empire.

Spread across the thirty-foot polished mahogany table were the complete financial records of Raymond, Cordelia, and Julian Brooks.

For six years, Raymond had used an elaborate web of shell LLCs, fake contractor invoices, and identity theft to drain my accounts and launder stolen money. But forensic accounting was my domain. What Raymond thought was an untraceable paper maze was child’s play to someone trained in corporate fraud detection.

“Look here,” I pointed out to Samuel Price and the Assistant United States Attorney, Karen Vance. “Raymond didn't just steal my income. He used my name to open three ghost construction firms that bid on municipal infrastructure contracts. He embezzled $2.1 million in state funds and routed the kickbacks through Julian’s nightclub accounts.”

Prosecutor Vance whistled softly. “That elevates the case from state grand larceny to Federal Wire Fraud, Aggravated Identity Theft, and Public Procurement Corruption under RICO statutes.”

“Which carries a mandatory minimum of thirty years without parole,” Price added with a sharp, satisfied grin.

“What about the $600,000 in fraudulent debt they placed on Elena’s name?” Madeline asked, sitting at the head of the table with proud eyes fixed on me.

“Already expunged,” Price replied. “The credit bureaus received the federal indictment and wiped Elena’s record clean. In fact, under the Crime Victims Restitution Act, all assets seized from the Brooks estate—including their Silverwood home, the high-end vehicles, and Raymond’s private pension—have been placed into an escrow fund transferred directly to Elena.”

At that moment, my phone buzzed with an incoming collect call from the Metropolitan Detention Center.

‘You have a collect call from an inmate: Cordelia Brooks. Do you accept the charges?’

I pressed the speaker button. “I’m listening, Cordelia.”

Cordelia’s voice came through the speaker, raspy, terrified, and sobbing uncontrollably. “Elena! Please! You have to talk to Madeline! They put me in general population! The women here... they are monsters! They won't give me my medication! I raised you! I gave you a roof over your head for thirty years! You owe me your life!”

I leaned into the microphone, my voice steady, cool, and free of any tremor.

“You didn't give me a life, Cordelia. You stole one. You kept me as a domestic servant, beat me down, and tried to strip my organs for your drunken son. You don't have a daughter anymore. You only have an indictment.”

“Elena, no! Please—!”

I pressed the red end button, cutting off the scream forever.
