Chapter 7 - The Courthouse AmbushThe morning of the federal preliminary hearing at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse arrived under a crisp, brilliant autumn sky.

Dozens of national news crews and cameras lined the marble steps. The sensational headline—‘The Stolen Heiress: Billionaire Matriarch Rescues Abducted Daughter from Organ-Harvesting Kidnappers’—had dominated every front page across the country.

As Madeline and I exited our armored Maybach, flanked by executive security, the flashbulbs erupted in a blinding cascade of light.

Inside Courtroom 5B, the tension was suffocating.

Raymond and Cordelia sat at the defense table in bright orange jumpsuits and heavy steel wrist-and-ankle chains. Their high-priced private defense attorneys had abandoned them after their accounts were frozen; they were now represented by overwhelmed federal public defenders.

Julian sat in a wheelchair beside them, wearing county greens, his head hung low in humiliation.

Judge Arthur Harrison banged his gavel with thunderous authority. “We are here for the arraignment and bail hearing in the matter of the United States versus Raymond Brooks, Cordelia Brooks, and Julian Brooks.”

The lead defense attorney stood up, clearing his throat nervously. “Your Honor, my clients request reasonable bail. Mrs. Brooks has severe hypertension, and Mr. Julian Brooks requires continuous physical rehabilitation following his motor vehicle accident.”

Prosecutor Karen Vance stood immediately, slamming a two-hundred-page evidentiary binder onto the podium.

“Your Honor, the government vehemently opposes bail on all counts. We have submitted verified evidence showing the defendants engaged in premeditated, first-degree attempted murder for insurance fraud totaling $3.5 million. We have audio recordings of the defendants forging a DNR order and attempting to unlawfully harvest the victim’s vital organs while she was conscious.”

Prosecutor Vance pointed a finger directly at Raymond.

“Furthermore, while in the trauma bay, defendant Raymond Brooks physically attempted to occlude the victim’s intravenous life-support line to execute a summary homicide in the presence of medical staff. These individuals represent an extreme, predatory danger to society and a severe flight risk.”

Judge Harrison adjusted his glasses, his face dark with righteous disgust.

“Bail is denied on all counts. The defendants are remanded to maximum-security federal custody pending trial.”

As the marshals stepped forward to escort them out, Cordelia broke into hysterical shrieks, thrashing against her chains: “Julian! Save me! Julian!”

Julian didn't even look at her. He covered his face with his cuffed hands and wept into his lap, finally realizing that the parents who had spoiled him into a monster could no longer protect him from the law.
