Chapter 8 - The Trial of the Black Widow

Nine months later, the criminal trial of The State of Illinois vs. Vanessa Thorne-Kensington opened before a packed courtroom in Chicago.

The trial captured global headlines, dubbed by the media as the "Black Widow Toast."

When Emily Foster took the witness stand, she wore a tailored navy dress and spoke with calm, unshakable dignity.

"Ms. Foster," the prosecutor asked, "when you saw Mrs. Sterling holding that amber bottle, what went through your mind?"

"I thought of Mr. Kensington dying alone in pain three years ago," Emily answered, looking directly at the jury. "And I knew that if I hesitated for even five seconds, Mr. Sterling would never walk out of that ballroom alive. I didn't care if I lost my job or got arrested. I had to knock that glass away."

When I took the stand, I recounted the psychological grooming, the calculated sweetness, and the sudden insistence on the life insurance clause.

The prosecution then played Emily’s phone video on massive 4K monitors in open court. The room gasped as the jury watched Vanessa’s cold, methodical face as she poisoned the champagne.

The jury deliberated for a record forty-five minutes.

"On the charge of Attempted First-Degree Murder: Guilty."

"On the charge of Aggravated Battery with a Toxic Substance: Guilty."

"On the charge of Wire Fraud and Conspiracy: Guilty."

Judge Patricia Moore looked down from the bench at Vanessa with searing contempt:

"You are a calculated predator who preyed upon the sacred bonds of trust and love to commit monstrous atrocities. You will never walk among free society again."

Vanessa was sentenced to Consecutive Life Terms in Maximum Security without Parole.
