Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The crystal chandelier above the grand ballroom of the St. Regis cast a dazzling golden light across three hundred elite wedding guests. Music swelled from the string quartet, and crystal flutes sparkled under the floral arches.

I stood at the head table, my fingers wrapped around the slender stem of my vintage Dom Pérignon flute, raising it high to toast my stunning new bride, Vanessa.

Then the world tilted.

A blur of black and white uniform rushed between the banquet tables. Before I could bring the glass to my lips, two trembling hands shoved my forearm with desperate, frantic force.

Crash.

The crystal flute shattered against the polished marble floor. Golden champagne and razor-sharp shards sprayed across the hem of Vanessa’s custom Vera Wang gown.

The ballroom fell into dead, suffocating silence. The quartet stopped mid-measure.

Vanessa’s face transformed from radiant bridal perfection into raw, venomous fury. Her jaw clenched, and with a vicious flick of her diamond-encrusted wrist, she struck the maid hard across the face.

Smack.

The sound echoed through the high-ceilinged hall. Emily Foster, a quiet twenty-six-year-old banquet server, fell to her knees among the wet broken glass, clutching her burning cheek.

"Security!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice shaking with rage as she wiped drops of champagne from her lace bodice. "Get this clumsy, incompetent psycho out of my wedding! Call the police and have her arrested for assault!"

Two burly security guards in dark suits moved in immediately. Guests began murmuring in disgust, shaking their heads at the server who had ruined the most anticipated society wedding of the year.

"I’m sorry! I had to do it!" Emily cried, scrambling backward on the wet floor. Her hand reached into her apron pocket and pulled out an iPhone with a cracked screen. "Mr. Sterling, don't let them take me! Look at your drink! Look at what she put in it!"

Vanessa froze. The color drained from her cheeks in a fraction of a second.

"Shut up!" Vanessa barked, her voice pitching higher. "She's insane, Liam! Security, drag her out now!"

"Hold on," I commanded, stepping between the security guards and Emily. My heart hammered against my ribs with an inexplicable sense of dread. "Let her speak."

Emily swiped her screen with shaking, bleeding fingers and tapped play. She held the glowing screen toward me and the front row of guests.

The video was clear, recorded through the narrow gap of the bridal suite doorway twenty minutes before the toast.

There was Vanessa. Alone in the room, holding my designated monogrammed champagne glass. Her eyes darted toward the hallway before she reached into the inner lining of her bridal clutch, withdrew a tiny amber dropper bottle, and squeezed three clear drops into the effervescing wine. She swirled the glass gently, smiled at her reflection in the mirror, and placed it back onto the silver tray.

Gasps of horror rippled across the room. My mother clutched her chest at the family table, nearly fainting.

Vanessa’s lips twitched. "Liam, it’s a setup! That’s edited! It’s an AI deepfake designed to extort us on our wedding day! She’s a disgruntled worker trying to shake us down for money!"

Emily stood up slowly, blood trickling from a small cut on her palm, looking directly into Vanessa’s wild, panicked eyes.

Then Emily spoke six words that froze the air in the room:

"I’ve seen that container before."
