Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH ABOUT THE SHOOTING
The investigation eventually uncovered the chain of events behind the attack.
Gabriel had arranged for Nicholas to be confronted outside the River North steakhouse.
The plan had escalated into a shooting.
Evidence also connected Gabriel's associates to attempts to interfere with Nicholas's hospital care.
Dr. Voss faced investigation over improper medical decisions and possible outside influence.
Nicholas learned the details from his attorney.
He sat in silence.
“Gabriel wanted me dead.”
His voice was barely audible.
I stood beside the window.
“Yes.”
He looked down.
“I gave him everything.”
I turned.
“Did you give him what he needed?”
Nicholas frowned.
“What?”
“Did you ever treat him like your brother instead of someone who had to obey you?”
He stared at me.
Then looked away.
For a long moment, the only sound was the monitor.
Finally, he whispered, “No.”
I sat beside him.
“That's something you can regret without excusing what he did.”
Nicholas nodded.
Later that evening, he asked me to read.
I opened the book.
But this time, he stopped me.
“Clara?”
“Yes?”
“Thank you for telling me the truth.”
