Chapter 12 - THE BROTHER WHO CAME BACK IN HANDCUFFS

Gabriel was arrested nearly a year after Nicholas awakened.
He had been hiding under a false identity.
Investigators connected him to financial crimes, the shooting conspiracy, and efforts to interfere with Nicholas's care.
Nicholas attended a court hearing.
I accompanied him as a friend, not as his nurse.
When Gabriel entered the courtroom, the brothers looked at each other.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Gabriel's expression was bitter.
“You ruined everything.”
Nicholas looked at him.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“We did.”
Gabriel stared.
Nicholas continued.
“I made choices that hurt people. So did you.”
Gabriel looked away.
The legal proceedings continued for months.
Nicholas accepted responsibility for his own actions and faced consequences under the law.
His wealth diminished.
His reputation changed.
And the criminal organization he had once controlled began to unravel.
But Nicholas didn't complain.
One evening, he told me, “I used to think losing power meant losing everything.”
I looked at him.
“And now?”
He smiled.
“Now I know what I almost lost.”

I reached for his hand.
And for the first time, I believed he truly meant it.
