Chapter 10 - THE NURSE WHO REFUSED TO BE OWNED

Nicholas was discharged to a rehabilitation facility after months of progress.

He could walk short distances with assistance.

His speech had improved.

And his doctors expected continued recovery, though some neurological effects might remain.

Before he left St. Jude's, he asked to speak with me.

I entered his room.

He stood beside the window.

A cane rested in his hand.

“You look different,” I said.

He smiled.

“Less terrifying?”

“Marginally.”

He laughed.

Then grew serious.

“Clara, I owe you more than I can repay.”

I shook my head.

“You don't owe me anything beyond respecting the care you received.”

He looked down.

“I wanted to offer you a position.”

My stomach tightened.

“What kind?”

“Private nurse. Full salary. Benefits. Whatever you need.”

I took a breath.

“No.”

He looked surprised.

I continued.

“I've spent my life working toward independence. I don't want my future tied to your household.”

Nicholas studied me.

Then nodded.

“Understood.”

I smiled.

“Good.”

He hesitated.

“Could I ask you something else?”

“Yes?”

“When I'm no longer your patient... would you consider having coffee with me?”

My heart raced.

I looked at him.

“Maybe.”

He smiled.

“I'll take maybe.”

But I held up a finger.

“One condition.”

“Name it.”

“No bodyguards at the table.”

May you like

Nicholas laughed.

“Deal.”
