Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO SIGNED THE WRONG CONTRACT

My NDA had seemed ordinary when I signed it.
Confidentiality.
Patient privacy.
Restrictions on speaking to the press.
But after Nicholas's warning, I read it again.
One clause bothered me.
It required staff to report all unusual patient behavior directly to a representative of Castellano Family Holdings.
Not hospital administration.
Not the medical director.
The family's representative.
Gabriel Castellano.
I took the contract to an employment attorney named Rachel Monroe.
She reviewed it carefully.
“This provision doesn't override your professional obligations or patient-safety reporting requirements,” she said.
I exhaled.
“Then I can report what I saw?”
“You should report concerns through appropriate channels. And if someone is threatening you, document that too.”
For the first time in days, I felt less alone.
Meanwhile, Nicholas underwent independent neurological testing.
The results confirmed meaningful recovery of consciousness.
His progress was fragile.
He needed extensive rehabilitation.
But he was no longer simply an unresponsive patient.
Dr. Hart stood beside his bed after the evaluation.
“Nicholas, can you hear me?”
He blinked.
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“Good. We're going to take this one step at a time.”
Later, when we were alone, Nicholas looked at me.
“You saved me.”
I shook my head.
“I read you a story.”
“You listened.”
I smiled.
“That's usually what nurses do.”
His eyes softened.
“Not everyone.”
I didn't know how to answer.
That evening, Gabriel arrived with a lawyer.
He demanded access to Nicholas's medical records.
Hospital administration explained the legal requirements.
Gabriel became angry.
“My family pays for this entire wing.”
The administrator remained calm.
“Payment does not override patient rights.”
I watched from the nurses' station.
Gabriel turned toward me.
His expression was cold.
An hour later, I received another message.
This time on my phone.
YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHO YOU'RE PROTECTING.
I stared at the screen.
Then forwarded it to the investigator assigned to the threats.
For the first time, I began wondering whether Nicholas was telling me the whole truth.
He was a mafia boss.
A man whose name frightened people.
May you like
He had enemies.
And perhaps Gabriel wasn't the only one hiding something.
