Chapter 9 - THE SIGNATURE SHE NEVER UNDERSTOOD

My attorney requested records relating to Harper Community Outreach.
The organization had been incorporated eight months earlier.
Its listed director was Evelyn Harper.
Me.
I stared at the document.
“I never agreed to run a charity.”
The attorney examined the paperwork.
“Your signature appears here.”
I looked closely.
It resembled mine.
But something was wrong.
The letters were too neat.
The final stroke curved differently.
“I didn't sign this.”
She nodded.
“Then we'll need to investigate.”
Further records showed that the organization had received substantial payments from Whitmore Development.
Some funds were then transferred to vendors whose ownership was unclear.
The attorney explained that the records could expose me to questions from investigators.
I felt sick.
Graham had not merely controlled my life.
He might have used my identity in a financial scheme.
I looked at Elena.
“What if they think I helped him?”
She spoke calmly.
“Then you provide the facts, preserve your evidence, and work with your lawyer.”
I nodded.
For years, I had believed Graham was rescuing me from poverty.

Now I understood he had been building a story in which I would owe him forever.
And possibly a paper trail that could make me take the blame for his crimes.
