Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT EVELYN DISAPPEARED

Three days later, I left Graham.
Not dramatically.
Not with a confrontation.
I waited until he left for a campaign fundraiser.
Then I packed one suitcase.
Collected my identification.
Copied important financial documents.
And called Elena.
She arranged transportation to a confidential temporary location through an independent support organization.
I left the engagement ring on the kitchen table.
Beside a note.
I am safe. I am ending our engagement. Please communicate through my attorney.
My hands trembled as I closed the door.
I expected Graham to call.
He did.
Seventeen times.
Then came the messages.
Where are you?
This isn't funny.
You owe me an explanation.
Think about Noah.
That last message made my blood run cold.
I showed Elena.
She preserved it.
Then I called my brother.
Noah answered on the second ring.
“Evelyn?”
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah. Why?”
I closed my eyes.
“Has Graham contacted you?”
“No.”
I swallowed.
“Good.”
Noah hesitated.
“Evie, what's going on?”
I looked toward Elena.
Then took a breath.
“I left Graham.”
Silence.
Then Noah whispered:
“Finally.”
I froze.
“What?”
“I knew something was wrong.”
My eyes filled.
“Why didn't you say anything?”
“Because I thought you'd tell me when you were ready.”
May you like
I began to cry.
And for the first time, I realized I wasn't as alone as Graham had made me believe.
