Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO COULDN'T BUY HER BACK

Graham reacted exactly as Elena had warned he might.

First came apologies.

Flowers.

Messages promising therapy.

Then anger.

Accusations.

Threats.

He told mutual acquaintances I was unstable.

He claimed I had been manipulated by Vincent Marchetti.

He suggested I had left him for a wealthier man.

Then he contacted my employer.

The Liberty Bell Diner.

My manager called.

“Evelyn, Graham says you're involved in some kind of scandal.”

I closed my eyes.

“I'm not.”

“He says reporters might come here.”

“I understand.”

There was a pause.

“Can you take some time off?”

I stared at the wall.

I had worked there for four years.

Covered shifts.

Trained new staff.

Stayed late.

And now I was being asked to disappear because a powerful man was angry.

I contacted an employment attorney.

She explained my rights and helped me communicate with the diner.

Meanwhile, Elena documented Graham's messages and assisted me in seeking legal protection.

Vincent remained in the background.

He didn't threaten Graham.

Didn't send armed men.

Didn't make dramatic promises.

He simply asked whether I had the support I needed.

And for the first time, I began to understand that real protection didn't have to look like control.
